Maybe another method would be somehow changing the assigned note heads for given notes... does that make any sense?
I'm dealing with early music, which frequently has uneven bars or extra notes that must be accounted for. In this instance, I would like to retain the spacing assigned to a half note, but print a whole-note. Easily done using symbols, unless you have to deal with ledger lines!
