What I'd like to do is create a new instrument, a mapping of a MIDI drum set. So I want to say, MIDI note 50 = bass drum, MIDI note 52 = snare, MIDI note 57 = low tom, etc. Then I can import the Music XML file and tell Sibelius that what we have is this custom instrument. Can it be done? It seems like Sibelius would be able to do this.

I've never done this but there is a whole section on drum mapping in the manual.

Thanks for responding, it turns out that the answer to my question is "yeah, not really". It looks like the Import MusicXML wasn't either a design or testing priority on 7.1. You can create a drum map as a new Instrument, as described on page 171, but the mapping does not work on an imported xml file. And, in something that clearly wasn't tested, the clef for the Instrument isn't even saved. So, disappointing, we'll see if any of this got fixed in 7.5.
