I have just purchased the trade-up from My First Sibelius to Sibelius 7.5.1. So far I have only managed to download the installer but when I try to open it, I only get the "Opening Install Shield Wizard" loader, after which absolutely nothing happens. This is the same with the trial version installer. I am running Windows Vista Professional 64 bit.

According to the specification Sibeilus 7.5 runs under either Windows 7 or 8, not Vista so you may be out of luck with your current setup.

Would I be able to resort to a version that supports Vista then?

Sibelius 6 is compatible with Vista, and is a stable platform. I would think your best recourse is to contact Sibelius/Avid support in the first instance. Maybe there's a workaround.

Some things to think about:
Check out the specs for 7.5.1. Core 2 Duo is suggested, though it will run on a lesser dual core. Specs say 4 gb of ram. You really need 8gb to be able to play large scores with full Sibelius sounds.
Microsoft is going to make W9 available on a test basses in the next few months. They will be making smokin' deals to people with older OSs, maybe free.
By all means, contact Avid and see what they say.
