missing bar handles

Some of the bars in my score seem to be missing the upper "handle". This, in turn, seems to separate multiple rests into undesirable breaks...instead of an 8 measure multi-rest I'm getting a 2 measure multi, followed by a 6 measure multi. I tried setting those bar lines to "normal" but it still doesn't restore the handle. Any ideas?

Sibelius splits multi-rests in parts usually because of some kind of system object. For example, in a piece I wrote, the trumpet has five measures rest at the start. Sibelius split the five measures into 3 and 2. It happened because in measure four in the score, there is a rit. In the trumpet part, I select the rit. and hit CTRL+SHIFT+H. The rit. is hidden and the split rest becomes a 5 measure multi.

I actually figured out how to restore the missing handles on the bars. Just select the bar line and press "delete". Simple, but nowhere that I could find in the manual.
