Hi - over the last six months or so I've been arranging swing numbers for a quartet (tpt altosax tensax and tbn). Upon completion of the arrangement, I send a .pdf to the other three band members. I also export an audio .wav file which, when converted to .mp3, is also sent to the other three quartet members. Until recently, the size of the .wav file has been typically 20MB reducing to say 3MB when converted to .mp3.

I've just finished arranging a number called Polkadots And Moonbeams. So I do the usual File] Export] Audio. The dialogue box tells me that the .wav file size is a massive 386.5MB (duration 38.21). I deleted the divisi staves leaving just four staves. The export audio dialogue still reported a file size of 386.5MB.

Another file (St. Thomas) has a .wav file size of 8.9MB (duration 0.53). Does anyone have any ideas please?

I've tried to attach the above two scores (in .zip and .jpeg) but they are too large.

Regards
David Wright

Some questions for you.

What version of Sibelius on what OS?

Do both sib files play back properly?

What happens when you actually export them?

Hi Bob - I'm using v.6.2 on Windows 10. They both play back perfectly. When I export 'St. Thomas it flashes through in a few seconds. Polkadots and Moonbeams takes forever! The St.Thomas file is half the size of Polkadots and Moonbeams but the difference is greater than a factor of ten.

David,

If you have some kind of cloud account, like Dropbox, or Google Drive, you could put the sib files there and post a link.
Or PM me and we'll exchange emails and send them to me that way. I suspect that there is some corruption hidden in the files.

A stereo WAV file is around 10 MB per minute, so I'd expect a 38m21s file to be around 380 MB. Assuming that the piece isn't that long, I suspect that it has somehow had a very long silence added at the end.

Open it in a wave editor like Audacity and you'll see it. You'll also be able to delete the silent section in moments.

Not sure why this occurs but I've seen threads on it over on the official Sibelius forum pages.

Thanks Bob and Andy. What I did to fix this was open another multi-divisi template and copied/pasted page by page from the corrupt file and then ending up with a 25MB .wav file which seems to support the 'invisible silence' theory. So, if the next arrangement is corrupt, I'll use Audacity to screen it.

Thanks Again

Happy New Year
