Photo score

Postby Derek » Sat Jan 21, 2017 10:24 pm

I'm very new to photo score and Sibelius. Has everyone got the same problem when you transpose a piece of music, it doesn't come out well, in other words, a lot of mistakes, such as repeat signs appearing, that weren't on the original piece. There doesn't seem to be a lot of options to make adjustments on photo score, so, the only option I guess is to send it to Sibelius. Is this correct? also, if I'm using photo score 7, Can I send it to Sibelius 8?, thanks in advance

Yes I've had similar problems with transposing in Photoscore, to the point where I don't even attempt it any more. The editing capabilities of PS are sadly minimal. If you use Photoscore (and I do, a lot) the general advice is scan, make basic corrections and do the rest in Sibelius.

I don't have Sibelius 8 but can use both Photoscore 7 and 8 with Sibelius 6 and 7.5, so imagine Sibelius 8 would be fine. It seems that if you have whichever version of Sibelius you have open in the background, PS will "find" it and send to that version.

Many thanks, for that, so, basically, as you said, scan it and send to sybilius,

Yes, though I'd get the Photoscore file in as good shape as possible before sending to Sibelius, which can be a lengthy process.

So, clear the bad timing count, look out for and correct wrong clefs and key signatures (happens more often that you'd think at first glance), put in missed text, dynamics, articulations, ornaments etc. Change the instrumentation if needed. Then send to Sibelius for further editing, which Sibelius is far more capable at.

Hi

I also scan a lot into Photoscore and import into Sibelius. I've found that if you can avoid scanning directly out of a book so much the better. So if your music comes out of book, best to scan that and print it in at least 600 dpi, and then re-scan but this time into Photoscore and that way I found the reading of Photoscore improved.

My question is that when you import into Sibelius - in my case 7.1 what do you put? I've never been sure. There's options of "let Sibelius decide", "transposing Score" - not sure what that means - choose this because you want to be able to transpose It in Sibelius, or because you play a transposing instrument? and the other options. What's best - How do you decide what options to choose when importing into Sibelius.

Another question is, having got it all nicely lined up lyrics and staves in Photoscore, why when you import it to Sibelius do the staves so often cover the lyrics line and it doesn't come out at all how you had it laid out in Photoscore?

If anyone is following this, don't worry about Transposing score. However, if you are importing an orchestra score you might want to not let Sibelius choose instruments. Do that yourself to make sure they are correct.
