Hi all,

What is the correct procedure to make an "a tempo" marking?

Combining the "rit"-line with technique or tempo text does not seem to be the ideal way...

Thanks

Lae.

Write a Tempo then put a tilde (~) and a metronome mark. Everything after the tilde is hidden, so although you would type something like
a Tempo ~q = 112 it would just look like a Tempo in the score.

There is a plug-in on the downloads page which looks for the earlier tempo, and writes it in for you, but it's not difficult to insert the tempo yourself. If you want to try the plug-in it is found at

Sibelius doesn't do it itself because there's no way of know what tempo you mean — it is the tempo you got to after the rit, but strict time, or is it the tempo you had before the rit? Both these can occur, so Sibelius leaves the choice up to you.

I can't believe looking at an old post would be a great help for me.
I have been using Sibelius for 12 years and have never heard of the "tilde." I have always written "a tempo" and then put a metronome mark and hide it. This is great. Thank you!
