Just a thought, are you using a film score style template?

Is there any chance you can post an image, or better yet a zipped sib file so I can see your settings?

Are you using the standard time sig shortcut (t)?

Those "ugly things" are called Layout marks. They are, specifically, the ones that show "keep bars together".
1. They dont print
2. You can hide them through View-->invisibles--> layout marks.
3. You can select and delete them one at a time, or all at once ( [ctrl/cmd] u) but your layout will change.

At least there are sibelius staffers there. I don't use video with sibelius and I don't think any of the rest of us on here do either.

At the end of the day, you have got to go with whatever gives the clearest result.

Bar numbers should be ON TOP of the relevant staff in parts and on top of specific staves in a score - depending on context, of course. It's not clear where you actually want them to be.

Have you checked your keyboard shortcuts under preferences?

I'm not a mac user, but on windows this issue is quite common. You have to look at the signal path to make sure both sibelius and the macos are directing the output to the right place.
