Are you using the same House Style? You might try re-importing the sytle from one of the files that works...

Copying cues especially would be helped by this option. Copy from one staff, and instead of Paste or Paste As Cue, the dialog would read Merge or Merge as Cue...

I would like to split the default big band layout so the trombones and trumpets are treated as separate entities, rather than beamed together in score view. Is there a straightforward method of doing this without starting from scratch? I'd like to apply it to already-created scores.

The sound is low if there are no dynamics presented (try entering an mf at the top of the line) or if they are low. I had the same issue, and still do on soft sections. But the dynamic range works well the way they have it configured, so I just turned everything up and live with it...

FWIW, you can open the midi files, Sib will create A score, but probably not nice and pretty like the original, you'll have to position things and change enharmonics, etc. Depends on how much info in the midi file...
