setting pace and force

Sibelius beginners can discuss all things Sibelius here ("how do I...?").

I was wondering how to input pace/force marks on a score. The pace should be andantino, and the force should change at various places (for instance: to p, mp or cresc).

How do I add this information to a score?

Thanks.

"Pace" in Sibelius (and in music in general) is referred to as "Tempo".
You can use Tempo Text or Metronome Mark text styles to write the tempo in the score. Here is how you do it in "Tempo Text":

- Go to Create > Text > Tempo or use the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+T
- The pointer turns blue
- Click on the first beat of the piece. A caret appears.
- Write Andantino
- Hit Esc
- The Tempo Text is now created.
Getting the word Andantino to playback the exact tempo you want, is a different story. Indeed, this word does not appear in the Playback Dictionary. You will have to insert the word into the dictionary (if you really want Sibelius to playback the tempo you want).
Here is how you insert the word into the Playback Dictionary:
- Go to Play > Dictionary
- Make sure "System text" is selected
- Click "New"
- In the (new) bottom line, click in the white space at the left and write Andantino
- Case Sens: click on the Yes which will turn to NO.
- Whole word: keep it YES
- Reg. Exp.: keep it NO
- Effect: click and select "Tempo"
- Value: click and type the tempo you want (let's say 110)
- Unit: select "quarters/min."
- Click OK
Now, the word should playback in tempo 110 beats per minute (or whatever value you chose).

"Force" in Sibelius is reffered to as "Expression".
You can use Expression text to write the dynamic indications. Here is how you do it:
- Select the note where you want to create the Expression text.
- Go to Create > Text > Expression, or use the shortcut Ctrl+E
- Now, a caret appears.
- You can type the dynamic indication (p, pp, mf, .......)
- Hit Esc twice
- The Expression text will now playback the dynamic value you want.

Let me know if all this makes any sense to you.

Yes that makes sense. Thanks. The dictionary lists Andante as 80 so I guess Andantino would be about 85.
