Alignment of keyboard fingering

Normal keyboard fingering is above the upper staff and below the lower staff. When using Text/Styles/Fingering, the text entry cursor wants to align with whatever staff is below it. So when entering fingering below the lower staff, the text wants to align with the upper staff next lower on the page. Is there a way to change that?

If you don't find a better way, you can always drag things where you want them.

I think this is related to the operation process.
If you first click the fingering in the style and then hit the note you want to add the fingering number, it does align to the next staff beneath as you mentioned.
But if you reverse the sequence by first hitting the note then selecting the fingering, it will then align to the current staff.
Hope this helps.
