I'm trying to insert a half rest at the beginning of a bar followed by a quarter note rest, eighth note rest and quarter note. After inserting the half note, Sibelius changes its value when I follow this by the quarter note rest. How can I do this?

Select just the bar rest and press 5 on the num pad.
Select the 2nd rest and press 4 on the num pad
Select the 2nd crotchet rest and press 3 on the numpad

Your count adds up to 4 1/2!

Thanks Mike, look at this please.....

This is what I'm transcribing into Sibelius.... Is that a rest of some sort (?) after the minum in Bar 16 or simply a 'speck of dirt on this old copied arrangement'. Is a rest possible between the minum and triplets that follow?

Looks like a speck to me, lots of others on the page too! A rest wouldn't make sense here.

I have now completed transcribing my old paper copy to Sibelius. At the beginning of each bar line is the clarinet abbreviation Cl.
Can this be deleted or hidden from view? Will it affect my music if I do delete?

Depends on which level of Sibelius you have, possibly. But you should be able to set this easily enough.

I have Sib 7, but I doubt if there's much change if any, in later versions.

From the Ribbon: Appearance>Engraving Rules>Instruments.

You can now set how instrument names are shown in the score. Long, short, or none. Apart from a slight re-jigging of the start of each system, it won't affect the music at all.

What you are looking at is actually the score. The score is a different entity to the part - although they are, obviously connected.

Sibelius makes a distinction between score and parts which many people don't understand. The score contains the parts and is always there, even if there is only one part. The Score contains formatting suitable for the production of a score, including the instrument name at the start of each system, which is a standard format for scores.

Select a bar and press the letter w.

What you are now looking at is the part. This won't have the instrument names at the left and will have the instrument name showing at the top left of the page. Any formatting work you have done on the score will remain, but may not be accurately reflected in the part. If you are producing music for a single instrument, I would always recommend working on the part. It saves you having to do everything twice!

As for Andy's answer - yes, it will work, but it is not good practice.

Andy, thanks for your input....

and Mike, thanks again, for yours.
I understand score/part now and by doing as you suggest, I get the clarinet part as shown.
Out of curiosity, how do you toggle out of part then....

If you look just above the displayed score/part you can see tabs, either of which you can click to show the relevant object. Also, repeatedly pressing w will toggle between the current part and the score. If you had multiple parts, you could use [ctrl/cmd]# to move between them with [shift] to go backwards.
