Is there a way to open open or convert MUS files without using finale? my college theory professor uses finale and sends us assignments and notes via e-mail but I use sibelius. is there a way to do this without using finale to save them as etf files?

Thanks!

I'm not aware of a way to do this. Perhaps there is. I'd be eager to know myself as I don't always have my copy of Finale handy.

Have your professor send the files as MUSIC XML Files within Finale. These can be opened usually by Sibelius. I use both programs and am a professor who uses Finale while many of my students use Sibelius. If sending the file back to your prof, I used to have my students send as midi files until I broke down and bought a copy of Sibelius so i could review their work on line.

If you've got Sibelius 4, then you don't need to download the MusicXML DTDs; they're installed automatically. It sounds like you need to reinstall Sibelius 4.
