Add notes without erasing previous notes???

Post by Sibelius-Bob » Fri Feb 24, 2012 2:52 am

How can I add new notes into a staff, without erasing previous notes that are already present???
Is there an EASY SIMPLE way to do this???
Does Sibelius have some feature (key command) that will lock currently present notes from being overwritten???

So many things that should be simple obvious features are SO FRUSTRATINGLY difficult to achieve in Sibelius unless one jumps thru 5 or 6 ridiculous work-around steps or goes searching for some stupid plugin!!! In my opinion Sibelius needs a major upgrade!!

If you do not want to overwrite what is currently on the staff, use a different voice. That can tend to get a little messy at times and you may want to consider just using an additional staff. Best of luck!!!

I've already tried using different voices, and the previous voice still gets erased when inputting notes into other voice.
Sibelius makes difficult so MANY things that should be SIMPLE tasks to accomplish!!!

Are you asking for an 'insert' mode, where inputting new notes moves existing notes along? If so, there isn't one and never has been.

If not, and you're sayng that adding notes in one voice erases existing voices in another, no it simply doesn't do that, so you're doing something wrong somewhere.

What are these many things that Sibelius makes difficult? We may be able to help you if you tell us!

Treble staff example:
1) I add notes to voice 1,
2) on the keypad, I think select 2 (for voice 2)
3) I think click/select the rest that was created for voice 2,
4) I hit record and proceed to play via my midi-keyboard new notes that I want to appear in voice 2.

As the recording goes along the new notes that are suppose to be ONLY for voice 2, are erasing all the current notes that I previously input for voice 1. How can I "LOCK" the notes in voice 1 so they are NOT overwritten by the new notes I am inputting into Sibelius via my midi-keyboard???

Which keypad? On screen or a real one.

In any case 2 is not the key to use. It's either Alt-2 (on a PC anyway) using the usual number keys, or click the 2 on the very bottom row of the on screen keypad. Note entry cursor will turn green at this point. Don't forget to go back to Voice 1 when you've finished.

From this and your other post, it's clear that you don't yet understand how Sibelius works. Are you perhaps moving across from another app that let you do these things? I always hate to just say 'Read the Manual', but going through the tutorials/blogs etc would certainly help.

Take this in the kind manner that it's intended!

I think I understand his difficulty, that is just the same as mine.
Let's say I wrote a sequency of notes in a measure, than i decided to transform those notes into chords (like writing in blocks) and just want to write addicional notes. When I click above or bellow the existing note, that previous note is erased and I have to write the new and the previous note again.
Complicated?

anyway...

How do I do that without erasing the previous note, and also not having to select the 2nd voice?

Thanks!

No, not complicated at all. You just need to learn how to input notes in Sibelius. :D

You make chords by inputting or selecting a note and then typing the interval of the note(s) you want to add. So selecting C and pressing 3,3 would add E and G above (and allowing for any sharps/flats in the key sig). If you use Shift plus the number, it will add the intervals below the selected note. You can select a whole series of notes and add chord notes to them if you wish.

I think this is what the original poster is trying to ask (which is, incidentally, what I'd like to do) -

Is it possible to copy and paste 1 line of music onto a stave which has an existing line already?
For example, I have a trumpet part and a saxophone part that are in harmony with each other but as I am trying to make a condensed score I want to put them both together on the same stave, for say, piano, to make them into 2 note chords.

Yes, I know, you can achieve this with voice 1 and 2 (filter note only, copy, select bar to paste into, click "voice 2" on num pad, paste) but it comes out looking unreadable (bottom note stem up, top note stem down, notes not aligned, other dumb stuff)

I don't know how to do it either, sorry. But maybe this clarifies the question? It seems people don't quite know what the original poster is asking.

I think your question is different. Try the Arrange function or the Reduce plugin. I believe you can pick and choose what parts to reduce.

Here's the Trick:

You CAN"T select the "SOURCE" measure itself (blue highlight) and copy it to the clipboard, and then paste it into a different measure (Target Measure) THAT ALREADY CONTAINS NOTES because the existing notes will be overwritten by the paste command.

The trick is to select the notes you want to copy in the SOURCE MEASURE using Control-Left Click.

Then select your Target Measure (blue highlight), and click on Voice 2 (at bottom of Keypad)

Then you're ready: Control-V to paste the source notes into the target measure WITHOUT deleting the existing notes in the measure.

Practice this a few times to nail home the technique.
It works!

Here's a thought in Sib 7 and higher:

Select the bars you want to copy
[ctrl][shift][alt]1 (top row of main keyboard)
[ctrl]c
Select target bar
Home-->Paste-->Paste into voice (use voice 2 for safety)
Done.
