Slurs killing print time and PDF disk usage

I've noticed that slurs and ties (1) add huge amounts of time -- minutes! -- to my printing, (2) take massive, ridiculous amounts of disk space when I save the score as a PDF, and (3) draw incredibly slowly on the screen when I open that PDF.

Has anybody else noticed this problem?

Is there a way around it? It's doubly frustrating that Sibelius is going to all this trouble to draw the slurs, because they don't actually look particularly good....
