How do I fix this?

[attachment=0]Screen Shot 2019-02-23 at 10.27.24 PM.png[/attachment]When working on the drum staff and using different voices: 1 for snare, 2 for bass drum etc, is there a way of not getting all the rests in there. I usually erase them after they appear which is very annoying and the upper voice (the snare) stems starts flipping and turning downward. This is very time consuming. There must be a better way of entering drum parts.
