I am currently writing music for marching percussion ensembles, and I am not yet ready to take the plunge and buy VDL. Is there any way for me to use something like the MDL soundfonts in Sibelius if I have access to the .sfz files? The default percussion sounds in Sibelius are horrible in my opinion, and it is really difficult for me to get a decent end product while using them.

Any external percussion sounds that you use must be 'enabled' by the use of a soundset. Making your own soundset is tedious - at best - and long-winded. Have you tried NotePerformer?

Other libraries are more expensive and can be tricky to set up.

Besides, there are lots of marching percussion sounds in Sibelius.
