Chord symbol input

Hi all,
When you input chord symbols and hit the space bar to go to the next chord assignment the spaces created where chords are not entered still create blank carats (is that the right terminology!). This means that grabbing objects around the notes is sometimes almost impossible because first you have to go in and delete all the carats. Has anybody got any suggestions for this? Thanks, DS
