I too am trying avoid the apparent "one pricey option" of forfeiting my Sib ownership in return for an upgrade and tech support. I write mainly piano pieces and worksheets for students, but Sibelius 8.3 is "acting up" and not functioning as it used to, and now I can't successfully update to 8.7.2.

Any helpful expertise=appreciated. I have songs that are "on hold".

No version of sibelius will run or install properly on Big Sur if it is before 2020.6 This is not Sibelius' fault, it is Apple's.

You have three options

1) Downgrade to a Mac O/S that will allow your version of Sibelius to run
2) Upgrade to the latest version of Sibelius Ultimate
3) Switch to Windows, which still allows legacy versions of Sibelius to run

You may not like any of these, but as Mike said, blame Apple.

Isn't it also true that Sibelius COULD offer tech support/upgrades @ reasonable rates rather than to ONLY offer people support if they forfeit their perpetual ownership for a not so cheap open-ended mo. subscription. I've used mine for 20+ years-but now I can't. Sad.

Well, the only option if you have dropped off the support and upgrade plan is to buy a subscription or buy a completely new perpetual licence.

In a way, this illustrates why it is useful to keep the support plan current. If you have had Sibelius as long as you have and intend to keep it longer, the perpetual licence with support and update plan works out cheaper than the subscription. It also avoids the issue of Apple being a grasping bunch of greedy capitalists. :D (Avid are no different, but for different reasons.)

Checkout the reviews on Trustpilot re: Avid. Unhappy frustrated people!
I got to wondering how Avid's support was and so I decided to google it. I also stopped by my local Guitar Center who I've done business w for years to see what they could tell me about Sibelius. They said what others seem to be saying, "Great product but unresponsive Customer Care". They said If I emailed them they might respond in 8 weeks or so. And they've not seen a Sibelius Rep in a very long time.

And I DID have reason to inquire when I downloaded Sibelius First and it would not load or open at all. Also I DID try to buy Unlimited, using PayPal, but it didn't go through, so I wrote them to see about that. 3 days later still no response- on my purchase that failed. Now I'm kind of glad it failed. Maybe I dodged a bullet unknowingly, but still sad, b/c I loved my Sib software.

Also I saw a review on Sweetwater re a Sib purchase, thanking them for helping them get activated and back up and running. Then yet another complaint re: Avid, saying they couldn't get them to respond...Thank goodness for Sweetwater etc.
FYI.
