Dubbed as "pausa di respiro" in italian, how can I insert an "apostrophe" after a note for indicating a short suspension much shorter than a real pause? The symbol is a an apostrophe at a specific point on top of the musical score

There's an breath mark apostrophe in Symbols.

If you can't resize this to your liking, just type an apostrophe in Plain Text. Then position to suit your requirements. Neither method will play back, of course. If you need playback, you'll have to fake it, with hidden notes, rests and tempo changes.

If you use the zymbol apostrophe, you CAN set it to create a gap using the inspector.

You need Sib 7 or later.

For sib 6 see image.

I hadn't spotted that, but there again I never use Sibelius for playback, other than for 'proof listening'.

But that setting will only shorten the note, it seems, leaving a gap. What I'd need is a full length note, followed by a gap. So I'd presumably need to change the tempo immediately before the note, and again after the gap?

It doesn't worry me. I, and my students, will simply see the comma and react accordingly! Humans 1, Software 0 ! :)

Just a thought but, if you have to breathe, don't you cut the note before the breath short?

Very true, but I tend to use slurs for that, and a breath mark to mean a slight pause, such as between lines on a hymn. Just me, probably!

More in the nature of a caesura?
