I would like to buy a fully functional (NOT upgrade) Sibelius Ultimate licence for myself, as a new registered user on a perpetual licence. There are countless adverts on the net offering very confusing prices. Can anyone give me a quick answer on this, where is the cheapest re-seller/outlet for a licence with download after payment.

If you work at, or are a student at an educational establishment, the cheapest option is to get a student licence.

If not, then you should look for bargains from resellers like Sweetwater. Buyibng the full program on a perpetual licence is relatively expensive.

I don't imagine a recently retired college lecturer would qualify?

Not unless you still have a college email address, which is what I believe they check for. If you have another product, like Finale or Dorico, there are 'Crossgrade' options that are cheaper than the full thing.

Thanks Mike, I'm afraid the email is the first thing that goes after 30+ years of service. Its time I guess to look seriously at Dorico 4.

I'm currently trying to find enough time to learn Dorico 4. The learning curve is steep and it takes patience and perseverance to break the habits ingrained over nearly 30 years. Dorico is being actively improved all the time. Sibelius is not. They seem too absorbed in their iPad version. A useless frippery to my way of thinking when there is so much wrong with the program.

I had similar problems moving from AutoCad to SketchUp for 3d construction design work. In the end, my years of experience on autoCad were overtaken by the sheer power of SketchUp, which also started life as a free programme.

I am over at Dorico 4 SE having a ball of a time, just finished my first piece of work. Great programme, not too difficult to get around but worth the effort.

I am so glad you have managed to do that. It gives me hope. I really need to get motivated. Family issues are making it difficult to find the tme to focus at the moment. But I swear I'm going to break the Sibelius habit. I gave up smoking, so I can do it! :D

Mike, sorry to hear about your family issues, hopefully all is well.

My motivation is my desire to enjoy my clarinet playing and improve my understanding of my 2nd clarinet parts. Inputting them into Dorico allows me to play along and recognise the rhythms. Many of which are American Marches!!

I have both Sibelius Ultimate and Dorico 4. I have spent the time to get to know Dorico, but still frequently refer to the Help reference. Sibelius has served me well for many years, but I recently paid my annual subscription, only to find it had gone up in price by 337%. No, that's not a misprint! Anyway, one feature I really enjoy in Dorico, which always annoyed me in Sibelius, is that when you have completed a full score for a large ensemble, eg., orchestra or concert band, in Sibelius all the parts have to be individually formatted. In Dorico, not so. They're ready to print. In any case, the price hike on Sibelius is a deterrent, so Dorico is tending to win my vote.

Just my two cents.
I'm in the same position. I still want to give Sibelius a chance but I've been using Dorico since version 3 and I'm very happy with it (I miss the keypad though). Anyway if Sibelius did not solve one issue that makes me nuts (I've already asked) I will say farewell to Sibelius once and for all.

Hey :)
Don't want to start a new thread, so hopefully my question matches this one:

I do have a perpetual License for Sibelius Ultimate. (Not upgradeable, run out in Jan 2021)
I currentely run Version 7.5.2.

I do have the problem, that I can't write text, so I'm thinking of upgrading to the current version.

If I buy the 1 year-update bundle, will I be able to use the then current version after the runout of the one year update, or will it be completely switched off when I don't renew the subscription after that?

Thank You for your help!

If the mac has a fairly recent OS, you will find many problems with entering text of all kinds on Sib 7.5 or earlier. It's a known thing which Apple will never correct.

You can take up one of the offers made by companies like Sweetwater to reinstate your perpetual licence for a year of updates etc, If you do this, you avoid the awful subscription model that Avid, like many other software companies, are trying to push on people.

Thank you for the reply!

So if I take the license directly from Avid I will not be able to use the program after that year, if I don’t renew but it should work through a reseller? Did I understand that correctly?

I found a workaround since I have a second older mac that still runs that system, but it’s stupid to use it everytime I want to enter text oder chords.
