A minor point but hopefully there's a simple solution.
I'm setting a tune that has one one-syllable word at the beginning of a measure, extended for 2 1/2 beats (half note tied to an eighth), followed by three one-syllable words, each on an eighth note (thus making one bar in 4/4). Typing this lyric in, when I press space at the end of the first word Sibelius moves to the first of the untied eighth notes, which is correct, of course. Then I can type the next three words. This is all working. However, I need to adjust the positions of the lyrics under the eighth notes slightly, for readability. When I do so, the word under the first eighth note overlaps the end of the extension line. Can't seem to figure out how to shorten the extender line so it does not underline the next word.
Thanks!

The only reason I can think of for this happening is if you are trying to squeeze too much onto one line. Try making the staff size smaller. Without sight of the score it is very difficult to diagnose the actual issue.

Not what I'd hoped to hear... the piece fits nicely on 2 pages as-is and I'd rather not go to three. Other than these extension lines the rest of the layout is not crammed all that badly.
Well, anyway, I was able to nudge the syllables a bit and that helped.
Looking in the help pdf, it says notes can be moved horizontally by changing the x offset in Inspector... but I was not able to get that to make a difference... maybe I need to turn off magnetic layout? I'll try that.
Most interestingly, though, the two cases where the extenders were clearly underlaying the next word, I was able to fix by getting a cursor after the following word, back-arrowing to the end of the offending word, backspacing to delete that word, and then typing it in again. Viola! Extend line suddenly started behaving. There were two occurrences in the score; not sure what I might have done to cause this in the first place.

Maybe you typed an extra space, or accidentally caught [shift] or [ctrl/cmd] which would insert a non-break space?
There's a trick whereby you can turn on View-->Handles which will allow you to grab the handle at the RH end of the line and drag it to the left. Just a thought...

View->Handles !! Yes this sounds like just the ticket! Thanks!
Going to go try it now....
