How do I figure out which soundset a MIDI file uses?

I have a large collection of old MIDI files to which I'd like to make some small changes. This winter I bought an old copy of Sibelius 3 for that purpose, but it's not going too well. Whenever I open a MIDI file to edit it in Sibelius, it prompts me to pick (among other things) a sound set for the MIDI file. The default value ("general MIDI") produces .sib files that sound really strange: single tracks divided among three or four instruments, things like that. I've tried unchecking the sound set option, or setting it to values other than "general MIDI", but no luck. The files sound fine (or at least, the way they're supposed to sound) in windows media player, so clearly the information exists. How do I get at it?
