This is my problem explained in detailed steps.

1. Start Sibelius
2. Open a score (any, but mostly SATB choire)
3. Play with internal speakers. All works fine.
4. Insert Apple EarPods with 3.5mm Headphone Plug.
5. Choose external earphones in system sound.
6. Sound still coming from internal speakers.
7. Open Playback devices (See screenshot 1)
8. Open Audio engine options and change from internal (CoreAudio) to external (CoreAudio). (See screenshot 2)
9. Close and click Sibelius player - Test. Then the EarPods works.
10. Disconnect the EarPods, and the sound comes from the internal speakers.
11. Reconnect the EarPods, and check that the external headphones is chosen in system sounds. The sound still comes from the internal speakers.
12. Open the Playback devices window, and Audio Engine Options. It shows Interface: External headphones (CoreAudio). Click Close and Close. No sound anywhere.
13. Reopens the windows in step 12, active click on External headphones (CoreAudio), Close and Close. Still no sound.
14. Restart Sibelius (See screenshot 3 )with EarPods plugged in. Sound in Earbuds.
15. Disconnect and connect EarPods, Back to square one.

It did not use to be like this until the last update of Sibelius. I have not tried to go back to the previous version, but would like to find out if there is any solution first.

I don't have access to a mac any more, but I remember problems with changing audio sources in the past. Like having to reauthorize devices.
I wouldn't be totally surprised if a Sibelius update caused problems with a mac, but only the first instance. Your OS just updated, but that shouldn't be a problem. I wonder if Telestream is not causing a conflict of some sort.
Good luck.

I am having the same problem. I did the identical steps as you have listed and still back to square one. Sibelius really needs to fix this problem.

Let me make this quite clear - you cannot change the output device like this when sibelius is running. Especially if you are using external devices. Always close sibelius down before canging the output device. Any and all devices that you want to use should be plugged in, switched on and fully connected before you start Sibelius. TBH, you are very lucky you didn't cause a nasty crash.

I too am having the same problem. If I plugged my headphones in, in the past, Sibelius would switch to them automatically.
Now it doesn't. With an update of Catalina to 10.15.4 I now don't have to quit Sibelius to make it work, but I still need to go into Audio engine options to swap. This is very clunky and time consuming as I tend to swap around a lot.
Please fix this Mr AVID.
