I've had playback sound for a long time; now I don't have it any more; what do I chk first?

Well, we need to know what version of Sibelius you are running on what OS.
But in general you can start by restarting your computer. Then check what audio driver you are using. You can find how to do that in the Audio Engine Options portion of your manual.

Did you check the things I mentioned? I assume sound works otherwise, music and video.

thx Bob looks like DLSMusicDevice plays back the little song software boot but nothing else

That's a wave file, so it will play when a sib file won't. What has changed on your computer in the last two weeks? I confess I don't recall how to fix this on a mac. But it does happen. You might need to ask on the official Sibelius forum page through AVID.
