I know that the playback line is not intended specifically as a unit of time but am wondering if there is a way to get the line to match the metronome? At slow tempi, it's ok but when it is a faster tempo it falls way behind.

AFAIK, there isn't. You might be able to get workarounds from the official Sibelius website: https://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpce ... &groupid=3
