Timpani and crash cymbal on the same staff?

So, I need both a timpani beat and a crash hit on the same staff - is there any way to do this that also sounds right? I'm sure I could just input whatever is needed graphically, but wondering if there's any way to do it "for real." One perc player, so no double staves :)

And sorry if this has already been asked, but I didn't find any mentions.

Not if they are being hit at the same time. You could do an instrument change in the staff (start it as a timpani staff and use instrument change to make it 5 line perc, but it will get very messy if there's a lot of it1

Exactly. Yes, they need to be hit at the same time. I'll just write something and get it graphically correct, which is more important than the sound =)

I think I would write out two lines. Then note that this is for one player. The two lines can be printed on the same part.
